LEATHER: The Natural Choice

GENUINE LEATHER

Selected hides are carefully tanned and dyed to the optimum levels of softness and color. Our craftsmen then meticulously tailor each piece with careful attention to detail. It is important to understand the natural markings of leather. Slight variations in the texture and tone of the leather are characteristic of natural products and attest to the quality of genuine leather.

Types of leather include:

Aniline Leather

No one will ever ask, “Is this real leather?” Full Aniline leathers have the look and feel of incredible leather. In fact, it’s hard to stop touching them. These are made from Full Top Grain selection, meaning only the top 10 percent of hides are used for this leather. Transparent coloring with micro pigments provides beautiful depth of color, allowing the natural surface characteristics to be visible. Full Aniline leathers have natural grain, not man made. As a result, this leather will display all of the following characteristics:

  • Healed Scars and Scratches – are from contact with fences, trees and the elements. Aniline leather is a natural product and no effort is made to hide the varied texture.
  • Depth of Color and Shading – Transparent colors are similar to wood stain, allowing for variations of shades within the same color.
  • Natural Wrinkles and Grain Pattern – Different sections of each hide have a unique appearance. A full-size sofa utilizes 3-4 whole hides.
Brompton Leather
Our top grain aniline-dyed Brompton leathers are hand-tanned in Argentina. Layers of hand-applied wax give the leather depth of color, while oils make it supple to the touch. Inherent variations in color make each piece unique, and over time the leather will develop a rich, burnished patina.
Corrected Grain Leather

Some leathers require correction of the natural grain as a result of the amount of healed scars or other surface defects. Corrected grain leathers recieve a light buffing to remove such defects and a new grain is manually embossed into the leather surface. The leather surface then receives additional dyes, pigmentation for color consistency, and/or a protective top-coat finish. This correction of leather grain changes the feel of the leather but generally improves the durability and decreases the amount of preventative maintenance required.

Basic Care of Leather

Avoid placing your leather furniture in direct sunlight (under windows or skylights) as the leather will fade over time when placed in direct sunlight. Some leathers are expecially sensitive to sunlight.

Avoid placing your leather furniture within two feet of heat sources such as heat vents or radiators. This will cause the leather to dry out. Dust may accumulate on your leather furniture but can be removed easily with a soft cloth. Do not use dusting sprays or other chemicals to dust your leather furniture.

Certain types of leather perform better when preventative maintenance is practiced. Ask you ratailer for suggestions as they may offer additional leather care and maintenance advise. Use of general household cleaning products are not recommended. They tend to break down the leather’s protective surface and cause damage.
